At Albany Civic Theater, everything — from acting and directing to set building, ushering, and behind‑the‑scenes coordination — is powered by volunteers (around 300 each season)! We welcome newcomers and seasoned participants alike.

Get Involved

  • Whether you're an experienced actor or a first-timer, ACT auditions are open to all. Held 2–3 months before each show, usually at 7:00 or 7:30 PM right here at our theater.

    Upcoming Auditions:

  • Prefer being behind the scenes? We always need help with set construction, lighting, costumes, props, and more. Auditions are a great entry point, or contact our Volunteer Manager any time to explore options .

  • Want to dip your toes in without a heavy time commitment? Join us as a house manager or usher—greet guests, distribute programs, or seat audiences. Great first step before diving into other opportunities .

Sign-up for the next opportunity here.

  • Members are the backbone of ACT. By volunteering at least six hours during our September‑to‑August season—or through paid membership—you earn voting privileges at board meetings, get to shape the season lineup, and participate in community decisions .

If you’d like to confirm whether you’ve earned a free membership with volunteer hours, please contact volunteermanager@albanycivic.org.

Paid memberships are also available. You may purchase a membership for $17 a season at the theater box office or online.

  • How Directors are Chosen at ACT
ACT chooses its directors each season from a pool of candidates who meet our qualifications and who submit scripts for our consideration. Qualification is determined by the board of directors, and plays are evaluated by a committee of ACT members appointed by the president; once they come up with a proposed season calendar, it’s submitted to the membership for ratification at the April membership meeting.

Like everyone at Albany Civic Theater, directors are unpaid volunteers.

If you’re interested in directing at ACT, the first step is to get involved with the theater—on stage or off. Get to know current directors and volunteer to work with them; experience serving in a production leadership role is a mandatory requirement for qualifying to direct at ACT

    2026-2027 Season
Albany Civic Theater is pleased to announce our call for directors for the theater's 76th regular season, which runs from September 2026 through June 2027.

Details, along with important deadlines and links to related forms and materials, are available here:

    ACT 2026-2027 Call for Directors

There are a number of changes to the submission process, so we encourage you to carefully review the document referenced above—even if you've directed at ACT in the past.

Some of the differences you may notice:

    • Both the director information form and show submission form are completely online.

    • We're asking submitting directors to provide one original show script with their submission(s); no photocopying is necessary (and is, in fact, discouraged).

    • People who would be first-time ACT directors can request a "pre-qualification" so their ability to direct at ACT can be determined by the board before show proposals are prepared and submitted.

    • Special events will not be considered by the board until after the regular season has been established at the April membership meeting.

    • Summer youth programming (during July and August) is no longer considered part of the regular season nor a special event and will be determined using a new process (which will be announced early in 2026).

The deadline for regular season submissions is 6 pm on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Questions about any part of the submission, vetting, or selection process can be emailed to prc@albanycivic.org.

Finally, please share this information with anyone you feel may be interested in or qualified to direct a show at ACT.

  • We invite interested parties to participate in ACT’s Sponsorship Program. Each year, ACT hosts a variety of productions from classic to contemporary works in its historic downtown building.
