Fat Pig

by Neil LaBute

directed by John Elliott

Auditions: June 25, 26, 2012
Performances: August 31, September 1, 2(m), 6, 7, 8 2012

Cow. Slob. Pig. How many insults can you hear before you have to stand up and defend the woman you love? Tom faces just that question when he falls for Helen, a bright, funny, sexy young woman who happens to be plus-sized - and then some.

Neil LaBute's sharply drawn play not only critiques our adherence to Hollywood ideals of beauty but also boldly questions our own ability to change what we dislike about ourselves.

Contains mature language and themes.

Cast of characters

Tom Sullivan (age late 20s to -30s) Tom is an average guy dissatisfied by his relationships with women until he meets Helen. But his love for Helen comes with a price that society, in the form of his friends Carter and Jeannie, extracts from him: making him rethink how he could possibly care for a woman who is overweight.

Helen Bond (age late 20s to mid-30s) Helen is very attractive and comfortable with herself; she is also “plus-sized - and then some”. With all the social pressures and prejudices that are brought to bear on her, what will or should she be willing to do to keep Tom?

Carter (age late 20s to mid-30s) He’s rude and crass and, like Jeannie, concerned with Vogue-type images of perfection. He loves raking Tom over the coals for his dating a “fat pig.”

Jeannie (age late 20s to mid-30s) Tom’s most recent ex-girlfriend. Her self-image is painfully shaken  when she is dumped for Helen.
