A Streetcar Named Desire

by Tennessee Williams

Set in steamy, post-World War II New Orleans, Tennessee Williams' classic is a tale of passion and sorrow, realities and desire. The destitute Blanche settles in for a “visit” with her sister Stella and rough brother-in-law Stanley, and instantly finds herself at odds with him.

Lost, deluded and looking for love, Blanche sets her sights on Stanley’s good friend Mitch. All hell breaks loose when Stanley discovers the truth about Blanche’s past and shares that information with her erstwhile beau and her loving sister.

As Blanche's fantasy world spirals out of control, Stanley's brutish, animal sensuality lures her inward, recasting the past as she wanted it to be, not as it was.

Winner of 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a 1948 Tony Award for Jessica Tandy. The 2010 revival won Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Play and Best Supporting Actress in a Play.

What the reviewers said:

“Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion (Williams) has spun a poignant and luminous story.” - New York Times, 1948
